Dahlonega, Georgia

Updated: Nov 18, 2021

The first major gold fine in the US was right here in Georgia!

Dahlonega is a quaint city located near many wineries at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They dress the town up for the holidays and have some special events during Christmas.

November 26, 2021 Is the Christmas Tree lighting.

Click here for their local events calendar.

Smith House

You can stay or eat at the Smith House for some amazing southern food. It is a southern sit down where you may sit with another family (not sure about now with covid). They bring you plates of mac and cheese, turkey and dressing, okra, creamed corn, collard greens, fried chicken, roast beef, green beans, rolls and corn bread, They night we went they had pumpkin pie and strawberry shortcake for desert. Don't be shy and ask for more if you run out of something. They serve ice tea and lemonade to drink.

They have an old Gold Mine in the hotel and you can look down into it. It is located near the bathrooms on the bottom floor. There is a very small, like 2 people, elevator for those who need it.

Gold Mine Museum

In the middle of the town square is the Dahlongea Gold Museum. You can pay to take a tour on your own. You go upstairs and watch a 20 min movie on the history of the town and the gold Rush.

Up stairs is a table where kids can do coin rubbings and they have drawers you can one with historical artifacts.

This is the oldest court house in GA.

They will show you after the movie an area where bricks have real socks of gold in them!

Fudge Factory Want a sweet snack or to bring home a gift, check out the fudge factory! I always love bringing home some fudge or other home made candy.

General Store

When you walk in you feel like you are in a 5 and dime store your grandparents use to go to. They have everything here, including cups of coffee really cheap!

My son loves to see the old gum ball machine and the fortune teller machine.
